For a washing machine, we'd steer you away from a converter. A washer runs a motor and an electronic timing board, and both are tuned to frequency — a transformer changes voltage but not the 50Hz/60Hz, so a US washer on overseas power spins slower, mistimes its cycles and works its motor harder. Buy a 220V/50Hz washer instead. If you already own a US one, size to the larger of its two loads: about 1,500W for a cold-fill washer, or — if it heats its own water — roughly 3× the heater (often 6,000W+), which is where buying native makes more sense.
Why a washer is a "buy native" appliance
A washing machine has two loads that both care about frequency. The drum motor is tuned to spin at 60Hz in the US; drop it to 50Hz and it turns about 17% slower, so wash action and spin extraction change and the motor runs warmer. Many washers also rely on electronic or analog timing for their cycles, which drifts off the wrong frequency. A transformer can raise or lower the voltage, but it can't fix any of that — which is why, for a machine you'll run for years, buying one built for 220V/50Hz is the reliable choice.
If you already own a US washer, what size converter would it need?
If you're set on bringing one, here's the honest sizing. A washer has two very different loads and you size to whichever is bigger. The wash motor draws ~350–500W but surges to roughly 3× that on spin-up. Many front-loaders also have an 1,800–2,000W internal water heater — a steady load that's usually the largest number, so it decides the transformer.

The most common mistake is buying for the ~500W motor and forgetting the 2,000W water heater. When the heater kicks in, an undersized transformer overloads. Even sized right, remember the frequency problem doesn't go away — this is a fallback, not the recommendation.
