Why a dishwasher is a "buy native" appliance
People assume a dishwasher is a simple pump appliance, but the pump motor draws only 200–400W — the real electrical load is the heating element that heats the wash water and drives the heated-dry cycle, pulling 1,200–1,800W for long stretches. On top of that, the motor and the electronic controls are tuned to 60Hz. A transformer can match the voltage, but it can't fix the frequency, so cycle timing and the pump run off. For a built-in appliance you'll use daily, a native 220V/50Hz dishwasher just works.
If you already own a US dishwasher, what size converter would it need?
The heating element decides the size. Our rule for anything that makes heat is about 3× the heating wattage. A 1,500W dishwasher wants roughly a 5,000W transformer; an 1,800W heated-dry model runs past a practical transformer size — which is where buying native makes more sense.

Many dishwashers advertise a low eco-cycle figure. A transformer has to survive the hot-wash and heated-dry peak, which is much higher — always size to the maximum on the nameplate. And remember, this is the fallback; the frequency issue still favors buying native.

A dishwasher built for your destination runs at the right voltage and frequency — correct cycle timing, correct heating, no transformer under the counter.
