What Size Converter for a Refrigerator?
The short answer

Short answer: for a refrigerator, you generally shouldn't use a voltage converter at all. A transformer changes voltage but not frequency — a US fridge is built for 60Hz, and the 50Hz used across most of the world makes its compressor run hot and give out years early. So rather than sizing a converter, buy a fridge built for 220–240V / 50Hz. The one exception: if you already own a US fridge and want to bring it, size a continuous-duty step-up/step-down transformer to about 3× its running watts — usually 5,000W or more.

Why you can't just use a transformer

This is the part almost everybody gets wrong, so it's worth getting right. US homes run on 110–120V at 60Hz. Nigeria, Ghana, most of the Caribbean and nearly all of Europe, Africa and Asia run on 220–240V at 50Hz.

A step-up/step-down transformer fixes the first number. It takes 220V off the wall and hands your appliance the 110V it expects. What it can't do is change that second number. The 50Hz stays 50Hz.

For a lamp or a phone charger, the frequency doesn't matter. For a refrigerator, it matters a lot. The compressor is a motor tuned to spin at 60Hz. Feed it 50Hz and it fights the wrong timing all day — it runs about 20% harder, gets hotter, and wears out. Think of it like redlining a car engine every time you drive. It'll go for a while. Then one day it won't.

Same voltage isn't the same as compatible

Even a couple of places run 110V but at 50Hz. Your US fridge would plug right in — and still slowly cook its own compressor, because the frequency is still wrong. Voltage is only half the story.

Pick the style that fits your kitchen

Every fridge below is built for 220–240V / 50Hz from the factory — no converter needed. Start with the shape that fits your space.

Finish and color

Stainless steel is the default and the easiest to match to an overseas kitchen. Black and white are common too, and some panel-ready models let a cabinet door front slide right on so the fridge disappears into your cabinetry. If you want a specific finish, tell us — we can usually source it.

Getting the size right

Overseas doorways, elevators and kitchens are often tighter than American ones, so measure before you fall in love with a model. The three widths that matter most:

There's also depth to think about. A counter-depth fridge sits nearly flush with your cabinets for a built-in look; a standard-depth model gives you more room inside but sticks out further. And don't forget height and the door swing — leave clearance to open the doors fully and pull out the drawers.

How to read the spec label

Every appliance has a small rating plate — usually inside the fridge on a side wall, or on the back. On a fridge built for overseas power, you're looking for two things:

Voltage: 220–240V

This matches the wall power across Africa, the Caribbean, Europe and most of Asia.

Frequency: 50Hz

This is the number a transformer can't fix. Seeing 50Hz here means the fridge is truly built for where you're going.

If the label reads 110–120V / 60Hz, that's a US-market fridge. It's the one you don't want to ship overseas and run on a converter.

Plugs and outlets

Your new 220V fridge is electrically correct for the country — but it may come with a different plug than your wall uses, since plug shapes vary even among 220V countries. Most of West Africa and the Eastern Caribbean use the Type G (UK-style) or Type D plug; much of continental Europe and West Africa also uses the Type C / E (Schuko) plug. A simple plug adapter solves it, and we'll include or recommend the right one for your destination. No transformer, no rewiring — just the correct plug shape.

If you already own a US fridge, what size converter would it need?

We get this a lot, and here's the honest version. Yes, it's technically possible. You'd run it on a large continuous-duty step-up/step-down transformer sized to roughly 3× the fridge's running watts (the compressor surges at start-up) — which for most refrigerators lands at 5,000W or more. It would power up and cool.

But the frequency problem doesn't go away. That transformer still can't turn 50Hz into 60Hz, so the compressor keeps working against the wrong timing and still wears early. You'd also be paying a few hundred dollars for a heavy transformer and giving up floor space. For a sentimental or short-term case it can be a reasonable bridge. For an appliance that runs 24 hours a day for years, buying native almost always costs less in the long run and just works.

Should you just buy one when you land?

Sometimes, yes — and we'll tell you when. In a big city with established appliance stores, buying locally can be simple. Marine, yacht and specialty setups

Not every install is a house. We regularly outfit boats and yachts, and vessels have their own quirks — some run 220V at 60Hz, space is tight, and you often want full-refrigerator and full-freezer columns side by side rather than one combo unit.
