Video: Choosing the Proper Converter
How to Choose the Proper Converter

For over 30 years, we've sold our voltage converters to travelers and people who are relocating overseas, effectively allowing them to use their electronics anywhere they go. The devices convert the electrical voltage up to 220 volts or down to 110 volts, depending on your needs. If you're looking for more information about voltage converters before purchasing one, please be sure to read our Voltage Converter Buying Guide.

About Voltage Regulators and Voltage Stabilizers

About Voltage Stabilizers/RegulatorsProtect Your Electronics
In some countries, the voltage fluctuates a lot more than a few volts. In many areas, “brownouts” are very common. This occurs when the voltage dips so low that lights actually dim considerably. For most appliances, this is a lot worse than if the voltage just completely shut off. Often, this low voltage condition is followed by a surge of power, which can also damage electrical appliances.

Other Voltage Converter Facts

Step Up & Down or Step Down Only?
In North America, parts of South America and a few other places, a 110 volt standard is used. In the majority of the world, 220 volts is the standard. When appliances from 110 volt countries need to be used in 220 volt countries, a “Step-Down” voltage converter is needed. When appliances from 220 volt countries need to be used in 110 volt countries, a “Step-Up” voltage converter is needed.

Watts and Volts

To determine the correct model voltage converter or heavy duty transformer you need, you must first find the "watts" of your appliance(s). You can find this information listed on the appliance manufacturer's label located on the back or bottom of the appliance or in the specifications section of the appliance owner's manual. We recommend using a Voltage Converter / Transformer with a rated wattage at least 50% higher than your appliance(s).

Items such as TVs, microwave ovens, laser printers and power tools require a transformer with 3 times the watts rating on the equipment. This is because of the initial surge of power required when they are first turned on.

Voltage converter are rated within a voltage range. Appliances rated for 110 volts or 120 volts can usually operate anywhere between 100 volts and 127 volts. Likewise, 220 volt or 230 volt appliances can usually operate anywhere between 220 volts and 240 volts. Therefore, any quality Step-Up voltage converter allows any 110 volt appliance to operate in 220, 230 or 240 volt countries and quality Step-Down voltage converters allow any 220 volt appliance to operate in any 110 volt or 120 volt country.

Step Up vs. Step Down

In North America, parts of South America and a few other places, a 110 volt 60 hertz standard is used. For most of the rest of world, 220 volts 50 hertz is the standard.

When appliances from 110 volt countries need to be used in 220 volt countries, a “Step-Down” voltage converter is needed. When appliances from 220 volt countries need to be used in 110 volt countries, a “Step-Up” voltage converter is needed.

Voltage Stabilizers

In some countries, the voltage can fluctuate more than a few volts. In many areas, “brownouts” are very common. This occurs when the voltage dips so low that lights actually dim considerably. For most appliances, this is worse than if the voltage just completely shut off. Often, when this low voltage condition returns to normal it is followed by a surge of power (watts), which can damage electrical appliances.

To protect your valuable electronics, we offer high quality voltage converters with voltage stabilizers built right in. Our Type 4 and Type 5 voltage transformers keep the output voltage stable no matter how much the input voltage varies. If the condition becomes too extreme, these high quality voltage converters will simply shut down, protecting your appliances.

A Voltage Regulator is a device that stabilizes voltage. In many places in the world voltage fluctuates. A Voltage Stabilizer or Regulator maintain a steady voltage, so your electric appliances can be used without a problem.  Our Type 4 and Type 5 Voltage Converters come with a Voltage Regulator. They perform 2 functions at the same time. They convert the electricity from 220 volts to 110 volts or 110 volts to 220 volts and also stabilize or regulate the voltage.

A Voltage Converter or Stabilizer is required when using your electronic appliances in countries where voltage is not stable. Many countries are supposed to be 220 volts or 230 volts, however the voltage often fluctuates. As long as it is within a safe range the voltage stabilizer or regulator will hold it steady at the desired output of 110 volts or 220 volts. If the voltage gets to an unsafe range then the voltage converter will shut off. We normally recommend voltage stabilizers or regulators for anyone that is using high value electronics or appliances. We also recommend them for anyone that will use in any country where the voltage is not stable. This includes many countries in Asia, most countries in Africa and some countries in Europe.

For Continuous Use
Heavy Duty Design The Dynastar / International Diamond Series voltage transformers / converters are made with heavy duty extra durable lifetime rated coil. They are premium models superior to other models in the market. Made to Last, high end design, are Heavy Duty.
CE Approved CE approved transformer.
Fuse Protection Fuse Protection
Recommended for High Value Items
Circuit Breaker Protection The Dynastar / International Diamond Series voltage transformers have circuit breaker protection. This built in technology will turn the transformer off when connected to a electrical device that is too powerful for the transformer. When this triggers you can simply reset the transformer on models that are larger than 500 watts size, while on 500 watts and smaller a fuse needs to be replaced.
Extra Durable, Lifetime Rated Coil
Silent Operation Made with superior quality high end Transformer coils these transformers are made to be silent. Should not have any humming noises like many of the inferior model transformers.
Thermal Protection Thermal protection is a protection that gets activated by a fuse inside the transformer converter when it is too hot or overheats. This can happen sometimes when the transformer is overused or used on a appliances that is very close to the max watts of the transformer. We suggest to buy a transformer that is at least double the wattage so that this protection doesn’t activate. If you wil be using the transformer in a place that is hot, then try using a larger transformer then you normally would for that device. This protection will auto resolve when the transformer cools down.
Overload Protection
High Temperature Protection High temperature protection is a protection that is in the transformer that will activate the fuse or circuit breaker when the transformer reaches a high temperature. This feature activates when the temperature is too high. This can happen when the appliance or electronics used on the transformer are very close to the max watts and the transformer is overworked. Once it reaches a high temperature it will automatically shut down. This can be resolved automatically when it’s back to a normal temperature or by pushing the circuit breaker switch.
