Every option here is a 220 electric appliance built for 220-240V, 50Hz power. The difference is which format and fuel type fits your setup.

Top or Front-Load Washers

Both top-load and front-load 220 volt washing machines are stocked, so it comes down to preference rather than availability. A washer with an internal heater draws more power than a cold-fill model.

Electric Dryers

US electric dryers are already 220-240V, which is exactly why they're easy to mistake for overseas-ready. US units run 60Hz and split their circuit across two 120V lines; overseas dryers use one 220-240V leg, a neutral, and a ground, so a US electric dryer generally won't work overseas, transformer or not.

Gas Dryers

Gas supplies the heat, so electricity only runs the motor and controls; it's the more forgiving option if converting a US unit overseas. Nearly all our dryers, gas or electric, are front-load.

One thing worth knowing before you order: a US washer or clothes dryer isn't interchangeable with the 220-volt models we stock here, since the frequency and, for dryers, the wiring itself, differ from the US standard, not just the number on the label.

 

Transformer Sizing and What to Expect

If you already own a washer and need to run it on the wrong voltage, sizing depends on the machine:

Size for the heater, not just the motor; the drum motor alone draws only a few hundred watts, but a heater can pull close to 2,000W and overload an undersized transformer. On 50Hz power, the drum motor also turns roughly 17% slower than on 60Hz, which shifts wash and spin behavior and cycle timing, another reason a straight voltage conversion doesn't fully replicate how the machine runs at home.

Even at the correct size, we've seen cases where a washer simply won't run on the wrong frequency, transformer or not. That's a real risk, not a guarantee, which is why native 220V is the safer route.

Electric dryers are a different case entirely; because of the wiring difference, a US electric dryer generally won't work overseas even with a transformer, so we don't suggest buying one to take with you. Gas dryers are the exception, sized higher at 2,000-3,000W, though even then the motor may not run well on the wrong Hz.

Buy Native, Before You Leave the US

What "Buy Native" Means

A 220-volt 50-Hz washer or dryer, or 220-volt 60-Hz where the destination needs it, plugs into a 220-240V outlet there and is bought before you leave the US rather than picked up after you land. For dryers specifically, we do not suggest buying a US dryer and taking it overseas; buy one made for 220 volts, 50 Hertz instead.

Confirm 50Hz or 60Hz Before You Order

Most destinations run on 220V/50Hz, but some need 220V/60Hz instead. The 60Hz dryers we carry are built for that overseas standard, not a US dryer relabeled, so confirm which frequency your destination uses before ordering.
