Why a US Electric Dryer Won't Work Overseas
It's an easy mix-up. A US electric dryer already says 220 or 240 volts right on the rating plate, so it looks like exactly what an overseas home needs. It isn't.
US dryers run on two 110-volt lines split apart inside the machine at 60Hz, a dual-phase setup, while everywhere outside North America runs a single 220 to 240 volt leg with a neutral at 50Hz instead. That split arrangement simply isn't there to plug into overseas, and even a voltage transformer generally won't fix it.
Because of that, we do not suggest buying a US dryer and taking it overseas. Some parts of a US 220v dryer are built to run at 120V and some at 240V once the two lines are joined, and there's no way to recreate that on a single-leg overseas supply.
