Technically, yes, but we don't recommend it. A 220 volt iron expects twice the power of a standard US outlet, so you'd need a large step-down voltage transformer to run it stateside. For an iron, that's a big, expensive piece of equipment for the job. A 110V iron does exactly the same thing for a fraction of the cost. Buy a 110V model for the US, and a 220V one for overseas.
Most 220V steam irons fall between 1,500 and 3,000 watts. The higher the wattage, the better the performance — it heats up faster, produces more steam, and handles heavier fabrics with ease.
Yes. More voltage means a faster heat-up time. That said, faster heat-up on its own isn't a reason to buy a 220 volt iron. You should buy one because your destination runs on 220–240V power. That's the real reason it belongs in your luggage.
Only if you insist on running it on US power. Because an iron generates heat, you'd size the transformer at roughly three times its wattage, so a 2,000-watt iron would need a transformer rated around 6,000 watts. Undersize it and the unit can overheat or blow a fuse. In practice, it's simpler and cheaper to just buy a 110V iron for US use. When you're in a 220–240V country, no converter is needed at all — just a plug adapter if the socket shape differs.
