Fan Heater or Oil-Filled Radiator: Which Should You Buy?

We carry two main types of 220 volt heater, and they work quite differently. A ceramic fan heater is the more versatile option because it warms a room fast and can run as a plain fan in warmer weather. An oil-filled radiator is quieter and gives a more even, consistent heat that lingers after it's switched off, which makes it a favorite for bedrooms and enclosed spaces like vessels.

Both types are portable, both run on 220–240V 50Hz power, and most fall between 1,500 and 2,500 watts. Here's how they compare:

Feature Ceramic Fan Heater Oil-Filled Radiator
How It Works Blows heated air into the room; can also run as a fan-only in warm weather. Heats sealed oil inside the unit, which radiates warmth outward.
Noise Level Some fan noise. Quieter operation.
Heat-Up & Retention Heats up fast; stops warming once switched off. Slower to warm up, but holds heat well after running.
Heat Feel Direct, targeted warmth. Even and consistent across the room.
Best For Quick spot heating, moving room to room, and year-round use as a fan. Steady, quiet warmth for bedrooms, offices, and enclosed spaces like boats.

FAQs

Are 220V space heaters more efficient than 110V?

Higher-wattage heaters generally heat rooms faster, but people usually buy 220V heaters because they match overseas power systems rather than because they provide meaningfully better heating performance.

Do 220V electric heaters work in the USA?

Not on a standard US outlet, since American outlets only supply 110–120 volts. A few US homes have 240V dryer/range outlets an electrician could adapt, but that voids the warranty and isn't UL-approved. For the States, buy a 110V model instead.

Can I plug a 220V electric heater into a regular US outlet?

You can try, but it won't get enough voltage to run. A standard US outlet does not provide enough voltage for proper operation, so performance will be severely reduced or the heater may not operate correctly. The real mistake to avoid is the reverse: plugging a 110V appliance into a 220V outlet overseas without a converter can damage it permanently.

How many watts does a 220V space heater use?

Most of our units fall between 1,500 and 2,500 watts, and the higher the wattage, the faster it heats a room. Plugged straight into a 220V outlet overseas, there's nothing extra to size or worry about.

What size room can a 220V portable heater handle?

These are portable heaters built to take the chill off a single room (a bedroom, home office, or sitting room), not to heat a whole house. For a large open-plan space, you'd want a split-system air conditioner with a heating function instead, which we also carry.

Does the hertz difference (50Hz vs 60Hz) matter for electric heaters?

There is no significant difference. Unlike air conditioners or fridges, these heaters don't rely on a frequency-sensitive motor, so 50Hz vs 60Hz won't cause issues. Voltage is the number to match: 220 volts into a 220-volt outlet.

What size voltage converter do I need for a 220V heater?

The general recommendation is three times the heater's wattage, so a 1,500W heater needs about 4,500W and a 2,500W heater about 7,500W. But used overseas on 220V power you don't need a converter at all; it only comes up for US use or a special case like a vessel with mixed power.
