International Electronics - Worst Case Scenario

.....and how to Watch Blu-Ray & DVD on a 40" HDTV from anywhere in the world - for under $650

multi system tvsWhile the trend of living abroad and working remotely continues to rise, so do the questions about how it's done. Depending on where you're from and where you're going, the answers will definitely vary. Currency, customs, government, diet, entertainment, shopping, transportation, internet access, phone service, safety, healthcare and a whole lot more - are all things that should be taken into consideration while traveling or relocating. Every destination has its differences and practically anywhere you decide to go is unique, even if it's barely noticeable. That change is what can make things exciting; but not all change is good.

Language differences and day to day customs can often be a struggle to overcome, as can understanding the value of currency and how it relates to your budget and lifestyle. One thing you can be relieved to have is entertainment. A way to kick back, relax, and enjoy yourself. After a day at work or a day out exploring in a foreign country, it's nice to throw in a DVD or Blu-Ray and wind down. But wait - although you remembered to bring some movies along, you failed to realize that Blu-Ray and DVD playability is divided into regions?? That's correct.

In short, the discs contain an embedded coding local to the region they're meant to be sold in. Likewise, the hardware/software in the players will only recognize and play discs from the region where it was bought. A Blu-Ray/DVD Player from North America will not play Blu-Rays and DVD's from Russia. The same is true for the opposite. Discs are only viewable in the regions of the world which they're coded for.

Now that you know, what are you going to do? You could have someone send you a player from North America so you can watch the movies you brought; you could also order one online and have it shipped internationally to wherever you're at. Either option would be a good idea, but did you also consider the voltage differences and the problems which might arise? You didn't? Well, certain areas of the world also have different standard levels of electricity. Some areas operate at 110 volts while other areas are 220 volts. The DVD player you need to play your DVD's won't even work where you're at. If you plug it into the wall, it's fried. Not to mention that you might not even be physically capable of plugging it in because electrical sockets are often different among certain countries, even if the electrical voltage is the same.

What a nightmare. How hard can it be to watch a few DVD's? Is it even worth the hassle? Of course it is. Luckily, there's something you can do. Buy a voltage converter.

A voltage converter will allow you to safely power that DVD player you just ordered from the US. All you have to do is plug the converter into the wall, then plug your DVD player into the converter. Now, FINALLY, your DVD player has power and you can watch the movies you brought with yourself! Just hook the DVD player up to the TV in your hotel and you're all set.........Right?

Don't tell me you forgot that there's different video formats throughout the world! Three of them to be exact - NTSC, PAL, and SECAM. They run at a different sreen rate and resolution, so the bad news is that the DVD player and converter you just bought aren't going to do you any good. You'll need a video converter box as well.

A video converter box is a............

Wait, theres a simpler solution than this. All this hassle has really stressed you out, and you could have never imagined going to all this trouble just to watch a few of your favorite movies. What happens if you relocate again? what will the standards be? are there even any standards at all?

There's a way to permanently avoid this troublesome and annoying situation in the future, no matter where in the world you travel to.

For under $650, you can purchase a Multi-Region Blu-Ray DVD player and a Multi-System 40" LCD HDTV.

The multi-region Blu-Ray DVD Player plays Blu-Ray and DVD, regardless of which region of the world you're in and regardless of which part of ythe world your discs came from. There isn't a Blu-Ray or DVD disc that cannot be played in it. Additionally, is has a built in NTSC/PAL converter so there's no need to worry about having a compatible TV. Also, the player operates on 110 volts or 220 volts so there is nothing that's going to stand in its way. You can a purchase the Blu-Ray Player here for $155USD.

The TV, a 40" samsung supports a multi-system video format so it's compatible with PAL, NTSC, and SECAM. It also can operate on both 110 volt and 220 volt standards. This means that the TV is compatible with the powersupply in any country in the developed world. The TV is $464USD and can be purchased here.

The only, and we mean the ONLY situation that you could possible run into at this point is that the wall's electrical outlet may need an adapter to fit your plugs. Great. For $25USD you can get this foreign plug adapter kit with plugs for worldwide usage.

Voltage Converters: Understanding Your Wattage Needs

shockedWhen traveling or relocating internationally, there's a good chance you're going to bring some electronics along with you. Since certain countries and/or regions of the world use different voltage standards for the delivery of electricity (either 110 volt or 220 volt), it's important to be aware of the standards at your destination. If your devices are designed and manufactured in a 110 volt environment and you're traveling to a 220 volt environment, you won't be able to simply plug them in as you normally do. The difference in voltage means that you'll need a voltage converter (also known as a voltage transformer) to properly operate your electronics. Attempting to use a 220 volt electronic device in a 110 volt outlet would result in the device not operating properly, or at all, due to insufficient power. The opposite would likely result in your device being destroyed along with the risk of possible electrical shock or worse.

While a voltage converter can simplify the transitions between 110 volt and 220 volt environments, you're going to need to understand that choosing a converter with the proper wattage capability is also critical. Someone who is relocating overseas an planning to take a great deal of electronics along is generally going to need a much more powerful voltage converter than a traveler or someone who doesn't have a great deal of electronics to bring along.

However, please realize that although you won't be bringing a washing machine with you on vacation doesn't mean you'll be okay by purchasing the smallest voltage converter available - your needs depend on exactly what you plan to take with. For example, don't assume that if you're only going to bring a laptop, cell phone, electric razor, and a hair dryer that you'll be fine with a low wattage converter - the hair dryer alone uses 5 times more wattage than the first three items combined.

To help you understand the variations in wattage used by different devices and appliances, we will show some examples below. Please keep in mind that these are only estimates and in no way do they represent numbers that are applicable to the specific electronics you own. There are many factors that can change the wattage of a device. This includes brand, model, size, and whether or not it is designed to be energy efficient. In order to identify exactly what size voltage converter you'll need you're going to have to check the watts of the actual products that you own.

First, we'll start with some items that operate on relatively low wattage. The items in the table below would require a voltage transformer with a relatively low wattage to be operational.

Appliance

Watts

Cell Phone Charger

Can Opener

150

Electric Blanket

150

Laptop Computer

150

Xbox 360

165

20" Box Fan

180

Next, let's look at some items that require a slightly higher wattage to operate. These items would generally be used by someone who was relocating as compared to someone who is traveling, but there are a few exceptions. A flat iron uses more than 3 times the watts needed for a 42" television.

Appliance

Watts

42" LCD

210

42" Plasma TV

270

Additionally, and as a preventative measure, it's recommended to purchase a voltage converter that exceeds the wattage of your electronics by about 50%. If your hair dryer is rated at 1180 watts, a 1200 watt transformer may not be sufficient. A much better choice would be to purchase a 2000 watt voltage converter to avoid any issues.

For more detailed information on purchasing the proper converter for your specific needs, view our voltage converter buying guide. The guide will help you understand the difference between step up converters and step down converters, voltage stabilizers, the different types of voltage converters and the difference in Hz (cycles).

Attention: Blu-Ray Collectors and Movie Junkies

region free blu-rayAre you an obsessive compulsive Blu-Ray Disc collector who just can't seem to get enough? Maybe you're a hardcore movie junkie with an international knack for good films who just happens to own a Blu-Ray Player? In either case, we have some excellent news for you; for the both of you.

For the OCD Blu-Ray Disc Detective: While you may think you've purchased every Blu-Ray Disc available today in North America; while you've scoured the local store shelves and relentlessly searched the internet looking for the lates release or that "oldie but goodie" to supplement your pristine collection - there's likely something you're forgetting.

For the Sofa-Ridden Film Afficianado: Although your impeccable tastes for quality filmography and rare cinema have led you to the deepest darkest corners of the internet in search of new downloads; Even though you thought you've attained a new level of acheivement by discovering an underground streaming video network where you watched the very first episode (and only copy in the world) of The Three Stooges that have been dubbed with Korean voice-overs... There's likely something you're forgetting as well.

"What is it?", you ask.

It's called a Region-Free Blu-Ray Player. Also known as a Multi-Region or Code-Free Blu-Ray Player, these convenient marvels of modern day technology allow playback of Blu-Ray Discs and DVD's manufactured from anywhere around the world.

"What do you mean?", you ask while scratching your head.

Well, contrary to popular belief (possibly due to a lack of interest or maybe because the ingenious idea just never crossed you mind), you can't simply take a Blu-Ray Disc purchased during a business vacation in Hong Kong back to the USA and pop it into the Blu-Ray Player at home. Well, actually you CAN pop it into the Blu-Ray Player but the problem remains that it isn't going to play.

"Oh, I see, it's because they speak a different language, right?"

No, language has absolutely nothing to do with it. The real reason the Blu-Ray Disc won't work in your player is because during the manufacturing process, the disc was enbedded with what's known as a "region code". A region code is an additional chunk of data that's been attached to the the original content of the disc. In turn, the disc player itself has been pre-programmed to recognize and play only those discs that are embedded with the codes originating from that specific region. For example, Blu-Ray Players purchased in North America can only play Blu-Ray Discs purchased in North America since the North American player has software that will only recognize and play a disc embedded with the North American region code (Region Code "A"). Additionally, things work the same way in the Europe/Africa/Australia/New Zealand areas (Region Code "B") and respectively for the Asia/China/Russia areas (Region Code "C"). Blu-Ray Discs from a specific region can only be played from a Blu-Ray Player from within the same region.

Now that you have all the information together, let's see if you (Mr. Disc Buyer) and you (Mr. Film Freak) can put the clues together - do you understand why this article is directed at the both of you?

The Region-Free Blu-Ray player dramatically benefits you both! Think about it...

For the Disc Collector: Nothing could be more exciting than stumbling upon up a whole new world of Blu-Ray Discs to purchase, right? Especially ones that none of your friends have. Although you may not speak German, I highly doubt you'd be able to pass up an alternative language version of your favorite film, right? I mean c'mon... even the text on the cover is in German! But hey, it's not just about language. There's plenty of interesting titles from Europe that you've never heard of, but the good news is that YOU CAN BUY THEM! Better yet, you can even watch them!! Well, as soon as you get yourself a Multi-Region Blu-Ray Player. You might just end up turning into a film afficianado, like Mr. Movie freak here.

For The Filmophile: I think you already understand. A Multi-Region Blu-Ray Player will allow you purchase unique, interesting, and very, very rare films from overseas and around the globe. The versions you can't get in the US. The versions where the ending was completely different due to political or religious reasons. The version that isn't the real version, but a Romanian replica version of the same movie with different actors and a different landscape. The possibilities are endless! And think about it, now you can actually own physical copies the best films ever produced, in the flawlessly high quality format of Blu-Ray! This means no need for streaming video via a remote server in Serbia to watch a low quality copy of that banned film you can't find in the US. Go to Google and order it from overseas! Order one from each country if you'd like! Who knows, you might just end up making impulsive disc purchases, like Mr. Disc Buyer there.

I'd like to mention to the both of you, that while all the focus here has been directed at Blu-Ray Discs, there is one final little bit of additional information for you. Multi-Region Blu-Ray Players also play DVD's from any region in the world! Yes, it actually doubles as a Multi-Region DVD player.

All in all, the world of geographical restrictions, language barriers, and movie-playing power has just been blown wide open for you to explore. I know, it's pretty intense - so take a deep breath, stand up, and go pour yourself a drink. When you sit back down wondering where you'll begin your search for foreign Blu-Ray and DVD's, don't forget that you need to buy a Multi-Region Blu-Ray Player first.

P.S. - We also have certain models of Multi-Region Blu-Ray Players that operate on both 110 and 220 volt standard power supply's. So, not only can you watch movies from another country, you can actually watch them in another country.

At 220-Electronics, the sales team has over 30 years of experience with overseas and international electronics. They carry high-quality Region-Free Blu-Ray players from all the brand names you love at super-low prices, as well as some excellent players that are less expensive from a few lesser known brands. Regardless, don't go purchasing the Blu-Ray and DVD's until you've bought the player - it'll be more exciting that way. Visit www.220-electronics.com right now.

Moving Overseas with Electronics

multi system tvsEach year there are millions of people who move overseas or decide to live abroad. Some make the move for business, others for retirement, and many do it for better living opportunities or simply to be with family. It's a growing trend with an estimated (and surprising) global rise of over 30% in 2012 alone. Making the decision to move to another country or continent is a big one and definitely requires its fair share of careful planning.

One very important factor that is often overlooked, ignored, or just completely forgotten about is taking your electronics. No, we're not talking about literally forgetting to take your electronics - we're talking about being able to use them once you get there.

If you're wondering "What?! Why wouldn't I be able to use my electronics once I get there?", than you need to keep reading.

Many parts of the globe, believe it or not, are not operating at your standard levels of voltage. It's true! Although most people are well aware of this minor yet important setback (especially those international travelers who've found out the hard way) or have heard of it at some previous point in their lifetime, it's easy to forget. Considering all of the planning, effort, and money that goes into making an international move, the last thing you'd want to forget or not be aware of is this:

North America, most of Central/South America, and The Caribbean have electricity services operating at a uniformed standard of 110 Volts. For the most part, and with the exception of Japan, everyone else is operating at a standard of 220 Volts. (For the record, to avoid confusion and for technical purposes only, the 110 and 220 are not exact voltages as 110 is considered to be anything between 110 and 127 volts, while 220 is considered to be anything between 220 and 240 volts)

So now you know. The next important question is "what does it mean and what can I do about it?"

First off, and most importantly, you should understand that if your electrical devices or appliances are made for a 110 volts that they will not work in a country where the standard is 220 volts. Secondly, you can easily identify what voltage your devices have been manufactured for by looking at the manufacturer's label.

The next step you should take is to find out what voltage standard the country you're heading to is operating on. This can be done with a simple internet search; seeing that you're reading this online, we already know that you have an internet connection. Excellent.

Once you've discovered which voltage your belongings use and which voltage is offered at your destination, the next step is deciding what electrical devices you'll be bringing with you. Keep in mind that the following options are available to you at this point

  • Bring your electronic/electrical devices with you when you move and ensure their full functionality by purchasing a voltage converter
  • Leave your electronics behind and purchase new ones upon reaching your destination
  • Purchase multi-system electronics

Typically, you'll find that your decision is going to include a combination of the above.

Of course the smaller, more important and user-specific items such as computers, laptops, cell phones, and electric razors can be easily transported in luggage. Therefore, a voltage converter is the best option as it's simple, allows you to keep your existing devices, and saves you from having to spend money on new purchases. Voltage converters (also known as voltage transformers) allow you to use your 110 volt device in a 220 volt environment, and vice-versa. The voltage converter plugs into the wall and you simply plug your devices into the converter itself. Simple, reliable, and cost effective.

Meanwhile, larger appliances such as washers and dryers are big and bulky and use excessive electricity. In this case, you're probably planning to purchase these products in your destination country. However, if you'd prefer to save money, you should purchase the 220 volt appliances locally beforehand as they are less costly than in a 220-standard destination. The situation is similar with multi-system electronics. Multi-system electronics hold the unique and convenient ability to operate in both the 110 volt and 220 volt environments. Televisions and home theater systems are the two most popular and commonly purchased multi-system electronic products.

Additionally, there's another unique product, this one being for those who take their movies seriously. Region Free DVD and Blu-Ray Players, also known as "code free" or "multi-region" players. These players can play DVD and Blu-Ray discs that have been encoded for use only in players sold within within that same region. The purposes behind the manufacture and encoding of region-specific discs are many:

  • Price differences in different regions
  • The ability to control different release dates for different countries
  • Preventing the playability of certain materials for religious, cultural, or political purposes

If you're a movie fan, if you plan on bringing your collection with you, or if you simply enjoy the ability to purchase and watch a movie in your native language a multi-region DVD player is exactly what you need. For Example, a multi-region DVD player will allow you to play DVD's which have been bought locally as well as those that have been purchased online from another country. Should you decide to live abroad or travel from country to country, a region-free player offers total convenience.

Last but not least, you should be aware that there are various styles of outlets that pose yet another obstacle. Different types of wall outlets/sockets mean that even if you have a converter, you might not be able to plug it in. Additionally, you may thing you are moving to a country with the same voltage standard but fail to realize that the plugs for your devices are not identical. Luckily, there are foreign voltage plug adapter kits, allowing you to easily plug in anywhere around the globe.

What does all this 'DVD region coding' mean?

This means that DVD movies from DVD Region 1 (USA & Canada) WILL NOT play on a DVD player regions 2-6. Effectively Region 1 DVD discs play only on Region 1 DVD players, Region 2 DVD discs play only on Region 2 DVD players and so on.

Why are there 6 DVD regions?

Movies are released on DVD at different times around the world, typically America and Canada first, Australia and Japan 6 months later, and Europe 12 months after US release. In some instances, DVD movies are available for purchase in America and Canada before they are released in European cinemas.

Due to the high quality of DVD and the movie release system used by Hollywood, 5 regions were established to prevent people from watching Region 1 movies before they were released on Regions 2-6.

DVD Censorship between countries also plays a part, another reason for DVD region coding.

What can I do to solve this problem?

220 Electronics specializes in Region Free DVD Players and Region Free Blu-ray Players that play DVD and Blu-ray movies from DVD Regions 1 thru 6 and Blu-Ray Regions 1, 2 and 3. Guaranteed 100%, giving you the freedom to watch any DVD movie, censored or uncensored, without having to wait up to 12 months for the official release in your country.

How do you make a DVD player region free / multi-region / Code-Free?

Our custom chipping process ensures your DVD or Blu-ray player plays every region disc available, using our custom DVD Region chip design. Our qualified technical staff modify and test your DVD player 100% with all DVD and/or Blu-ray egions before leaving our warehouse.

What if the movie studios put a DVD region protection system into the movie disc?

The DVD region protection system, 'RCE' was introduced 8 years ago, and all our DVD players play RCE discs 100%. So far no other 'new' protection system is possible other than RCE due to the way the DVD region format works. Our players play all protected 'RCE' DVD discs.

Enjoy the freedom that 220 Electronics offers, the freedom to watch any DVD movie from anywhere, Code-Free / Region Free!

Our DVD and Blu-ray Players play all movies from all regions, Guaranteed for Life!
